about

This song is about Groote Eylandt, I wrote this for my mum when I was 14 and it was the first Mother’s Day she had without my grandmother. This talks about the experiences that my mother had with my grandmother in NT travelling and going ceremony and how the West mamarika winds will carry her back home to where she says her heart will always belong. The lady speaking is gagu (grandmother) guyangwa, she is my Mum’s grandmother, my great great grandmother. She taught me how to weave baskets and be compassionate - I was singing at her funeral and Gagu gayangwa was holding me so that I wouldn’t falter, her presence made me feel strong and proud.

lyrics

We walked red plains
Dust in my eyes
Sun in the sky and you on my mind
Longing for a place
A place to call home
Soft pearly white sand to call my own

My island home
She’s so pretty so blue
And all the trees
Are greener there too
On my island home
The spirit still strong
And I will ask the wind to carry me home

Back to my home
(Nganyang Angalya ) - “my home”

The Sun and the moon
She follow me oh
Wherever I go
Wherever I’ll be
Sunrise and sunsets
They’re never the same
Cause there are different people around the world
Sharing my gaze
